PFE Executive Summary 3-12-07

African Telecoms seem to have three kinds of players:

  • High end companies which have paid high license fees to have virtual monopolies,
  • Middle aged boutique providers which specialize in special parts of the market with specialized services,
  • New companies attempting to enter the markets.

Copper and fiber Bandwidth is inadequate for growing demand. More Fiber is coming in from offshore in the next few years. Satellite air time is a good market but still pricey. It is a good time to go in with satellite, but band width availability will increase as fiber is laid.

  • I believe there is 4-6 year window to become established in a market before increased bandwidth drops air time prices.
  • It is not yet clear if State Monopolies will resort to competitor elimination practices, like the ones in the US the resulted in anti-trust laws.

  • There is this great online Journal Called Builders on line.
    It has detailed regional information on Builders and their activities.
  • Interest rates have dropped to their lowest rates in 30 years this week.

Uganda:

  • There appear to be meetings to set up new peace talks.
  • The largest Telecom in Uganda was bought by an investment arm of the country of Libya. Libya, a strong promote of Islam in Africa, now owns 51%, and the Uganda government owns 49%. (more)

Egypt

  • Christians in Egypt continue to be persecuted and prosecuted.
  • Recently an Internet blogger-reporter received 4 years in prison for insulting the Egyptian President, and Islam. (more)
